I’m Izzie - I’m a member of the Marketing team at the Centre, and I’m also a Carer for my husband, Joe, who comes here for physical therapies.   I know that Carers are a vital part of the support team for someone with a neurological condition - we often carry a huge responsibility with little or no training and preparation.  It’s important that as Carers, we know our rights and entitlements.

That’s why I’m supporting Carers’ Rights Day on November 23rd. We all need to know what rights we have, and what’s available in terms of practical and financial support.   It’s often hard to access information and resources in between coping with the challenges that caring brings.   That’s what Carers’ Rights Day is about – making sure that we know where we can find help, and making wider society aware of the contribution made by unpaid Carers, so that we receive the support we need.

Depending on where you live, there are organisations that can help with benefits, employment rights, respite care and other support. I’ve listed some of these below.

If you’re based in North East Wales, contact NEWCIS. If you’re in the Cheshire and Warrington area, then Cheshire and Warrington Carers’ Trust are the people to go to. I know from personal experience how helpful these organisations are, and I recommend you contact them for a chat if you haven’t already done so.

Carers UK is a nationwide organisation which offers advice and information for unpaid Carers, and is also involved with campaigning and lobbying Government on behalf of Carers.  They’re currently supporting the Carer’s Leave Act, which will give working carers more rights to time off without impacting their holiday allocation. Take a look at their website for further details of how to get involved.

The most important thing to remember is that you’re not alone, you don’t have to do this all by yourself. Make sure you’re getting everything you’re entitled to, and all the support you need – there are people in the Centre to help you, and organisations that can give you any advice you need.
